How Donors Bring Summer Camp to Medically Fragile Kids
Each summer, something extraordinary happens in the quiet hills of rural Pennsylvania: medically fragile children who rely on machines to breathe get to zip-line, swim, laugh, and just be kids—thanks to the generosity of donors.
For a week in June, Camp Victory becomes the home of PA Vent Camp, one of Camp Victory’s most medically complex weeks. With an annual donation, Children’s Miracle Network is proud to be the largest funder of this life-changing experience.
More Than Medical—A Full Camp Experience
PA Vent Camp welcomes around 20 campers each year, ages 5 to 18, most of whom use mechanical ventilation, CPAP or BiPAP machines, feeding tubes, and other medical supports. They’re matched with a dedicated care team—up to three caregivers per camper, including respiratory therapists and overnight volunteers. That ratio allows every child to safely experience the joy of camp, fully and freely.
Despite the complexity of their care, these campers enjoy a classic, action-packed summer experience: rock climbing, talent shows, archery, a mobile escape room, arts and crafts, and dance classes—all adapted for full accessibility. The week’s theme adds extra fun—like the 2025 theme of Secret Spy Camp.
“For one week, these kids aren’t patients—they’re just campers,” says one longtime volunteer. “They get to connect, play, and experience the outdoors like any other kid. It’s incredible to witness.”

A Camp Like No Other
PA Vent Camp is one of just a handful of programs in the U.S. serving this population. Tonya, one of the camp’s founding members, helped launch the camp in 1994 after being inspired by a similar program in Michigan. Since its inception, the camp has welcomed 708 campers.
For many families, this is the only place their child can safely attend camp. And being surrounded by others who understand their experience—that’s where the magic really happens.
Campers come from all over, with priority given to Pennsylvania residents and patients from Penn State Health Children’s Hospital. Many families find the program through health agencies, home care providers, physicians, and word of mouth. Applications are open online, and the camp is completely free for families. No staff are paid—everyone involved is a volunteer, both medical and non-medical.
Camp Victory itself is a 130-acre property built specifically for children with serious health needs. The facility is thoughtfully designed to be fully accessible, including treehouses with ramps, specialty harnesses for the climbing wall and zip line, paved trails, and medical accommodations throughout.
When COVID made in-person gatherings impossible, camp transformed into a virtual experience—with zoo visits, escape rooms, dances, and talent shows bringing joy and connection when it was needed most. Today, that same sense of community drives the camp’s leadership team to empower the next generation of caregivers and volunteers by partnering with nursing schools and expanding opportunities for students to learn, serve, and grow alongside the PA Vent Camp family.
You Make Camp Possible
