NICU Awareness Month: The Healing Power of a Cuddle

In the NICU at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, healing doesn’t only come from machines and medicine. It also comes from the warmth of human touch. That’s where NICU cuddlers step in—specially trained volunteers who hold, rock, read, or sing to premature and critically ill babies. When families can’t be at the bedside, cuddlers make sure these tiny patients are never alone, offering a comfort that helps calm their bodies and support healthy development.

Steve O’Neill, a cuddler for nearly 10 years, has seen firsthand how babies respond to gentle care. “Some need to be soothed and finally drift off to sleep. Others respond to my voice and expressions,” he says. Partnering closely with nurses, Steve sees himself as part of the team. “It can be hard to learn about all of the obstacles our patients face, but I’m happy to help however I can in the time I have with them.”

Barb Bowser calls being a cuddler the “best job I’ve ever had.” After retiring, she knew she wanted to give back and found her calling in the NICU. She remembers speaking with one mother who was deeply grateful cuddlers could be with her baby when she had to be at work or caring for her other children. Barb has seen babies settle almost instantly when held against her chest. “You can see the difference in their heart rate on the monitor almost immediately. Their bodies relax,” she says.

Susan Hendricks, who has volunteered since 2014, recalls singing softly to a baby one afternoon when she noticed the mother watching from the doorway with tears in her eyes. “She was so grateful that someone other than the medical staff cared enough for her child,” Susan remembers. “I’ll always remember the hug she gave me when I left the room. These babies are my heroes.”

While cuddlers give their time and their hearts, it’s donor support that makes the NICU environment as nurturing as possible. Specialized beds and motion swings help babies grow, bedside cameras connect families to their babies through their phones, and programs like Child Life, music therapy, and patient assistance bring families comfort during difficult days.

This NICU Awareness Month, we celebrate all the hands and hearts that support our tiniest patients. Every cuddle, every song, every quiet moment is part of a network of care made possible by donors like you. Your gift today will be doubled up to $25,000 by our Online Gifts Sponsors, bringing us closer to our $75,000 goal for babies, families, and the region’s only Level IV NICU.
